This poort links the western section of the Baviaanskloof with the higher Karoo hinterland, and more specifically, the towns of Willowmore and Uniondale, which are usual refuelling points. The pass needs to be driven slowly to best appreciate its dramatic Eastern Cape uniqueness.
The route crosses over what is a stream in the drier seasons, and after heavy rains, a raging river which should be tackled with caution, experience and - most critically - a 4x4! However, a normal sedan car will comfortably manage the road during dry weather. One will cross over the river more than ten times due to the road's approximation of the river throughout the length of the poort.
