Hiking Trails

At the top of the Gifberg, accessible via the Gifberg Pass,  there is a 2 day hiking trail to to the Ouberg Waterfalls.

Starting at Dave's Farm at the top of the pass up the Gifberg. Flower season in the Knersvlakte is an experience you won't soon forget, and hiking this region brings one even closer to Nature during this special time.


Nature Conservation also arranges a hike through the Knersvlakte.


There are also a number of hikes available on private farms.


Bush Train Safaris: Flower Route 

 A 7 day/6 night; combination of train safari and opportunity for walks in the Namakwaland flower area, which departs from Pretoria. Accommodation is on the train and the service runs from August to September; 

Close to Calvinia, this 1 hour, easy walk for senior citizens in a nature reserve is ideal to appreciate the area. There is a campsite in Calvinia. There is no charge for the hike.

A 6-7 hour, average difficulty hike in a nature reserve. Near to Calvinia.

De Hoop
A 12km,1 day hike near Niewoudtville. This circular, easy route has a detour to a waterfall which is difficult. There is accommodation in a homestead on the farm Papkuilsfontein.

Geelbekbosduif / Rameron Pigeon
A 38km/4 day, difficult, circular route in a nature reserve near Niewoudtville which requires own tent
Oorlogskloof Nature Reserve

Kransduif / Rock Pigeon

A 46km/4 day, difficult, circular route in a nature reserve near Niewoudtville requiring own tent. Oorlogskloof Nature Reserve

Rameron Pigeon Trail 
The Rameron Pigeon Trail offers a choice of between 4-7 days. The route stays the same irrespective of the number of days taken. The shorter the time the more strenuous the trail.

Much of the time is spent in indigenous forest on the banks of the Oorlogskloof River.

The trail also leads past several large stone structures that date back to the early days of the pioneer farmers.

Rietvlei Day Hike

A 18km, 7 to 10 hr day hike. An ideal route for those wanting to swim in the Oorlogskloof River and also visit  the Knersvlakte viewing site.

Rock Pigeon Hiking Trail

Oorlogskloof Nature Reserve is situated 16km outside Nieuwoudtville and about 50km from Vanrhynsdorp. It comprises of 4776 hectares of mountains, dissected by deep river gorges through which the Oorlogskloof River flows. It has a rich and diverse plant life, a result of being situated on the transition/ecotone area of the Fynbos and Karoo Biomes.

Two major hiking trails have been designated in the reserve as well as two  one day walks.

The trail starts Groot Tuin, where there is an overnight shelter available.

The Leopard Trap

The Leopard Trap Day Hike is about 15km or 6-9 hrs. This follows a route from Groot Tuin past the leopard cage to the Knersvlakte viewing site in the Oorlogskloof Nature Reserve
