Dr Antoinie Viljoen founded the apple industry in 1902.
This winding pass between the Hottentots Holland Mountains and the Groenlandsberge is named after him. It was first built in the mid 1800s.
The road follows a different route to the original one, not vastly different though. The views from the top of this pass are magnificent, as you view the apple orchards below and gain a panoramic view of the valley and Theewaterskloof Dam..
The whole region is renowned for its fruit growing and has such natural beauty, it has to be taken in as slowly and purposefully as possible. Apart from the view from Viljoens Pass, the Dam has an effect of tranquility. Indeed take a day's drive through this enchanting area.
