The Helshoogte pass connects Stellenbosch to the small Boland town of Pniel and eventually on to the R45 road to Franschhoek.
Helshoogte is quite spectacular and scenic as it winds it's way between the Simonsberg and Stellenbosch Berg mountains.
The Helshoogte Pass is a deviation of the old Banghoek Pass (Banhoek). It was so named because of the wild animals which lurked in the region, frightening travellers away.
The Helshoogte Pass used today is a new road built to replace the old and now disused road starting in Idas Vallei and eventually leading to the new pass. Access to the old pass is no longer allowed. This is unfortunate as the old road takes drivers and riders through a beautiful forest with great views and the picturesque Stellenbosch Dam.
Visitors touring the Boland towns of Stellenbosch and Franschhoek are encouraged to drive through the pass and also visit the many reputable wineries along the way.
