Hornsnek a pass through the Magaliesberg is situated west of Pretoria on Hornsnek Rd (M17), midway between the R514 to the south and the Platinum Highway to the north. The Magaliesberg range, more than 100km long, stretched from Rustenburg in the west to east of Pretoria and is a natural divide between the hot northern bushveld and the cooler southern highveld. The approach to the pass from the north travelling southbound towards the R514. The ascent is gradual, culminating in a bend to the right at the top of the pass, just visible in the far distance. The motorists view from the pass looking south with the outlying suburbs of Pretoria about to come into view around the bend ahead.
